This course provide learners with a Fundamental understanding of BS 5839-1:2017, Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings. Part 1: Code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises.


The learner will Complete sections on the following:

1. Understand the general requirements of BS 5839-1.

2. Understand the design considerations for fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings.

3. Understand the requirements in relation to the responsibility for the limitation of false alarms and unwanted fire alarm signals.

4. Understand requirements of BS 5839-1 in relation to the installation of fire detection and fire alarm systems.

5. Understand the requirements of BS 5839-1 in relation to the commissioning and handover of fire detection and fire alarm systems.

6. Understand the requirements of BS 5839-1 in relation to the maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems.

7. Understand the requirements of BS 5839-1 in relation to the user’s responsibilities of fire detection and fire alarm systems.

8. Understand the information contained within the annexes of BS 5839-1.


On the final day you will be of this unit will be assessed by an on-screen examination graded pass or fail only. The exam covers the recommendations and commentary of BS 5839-1:2017.

Learners are permitted the use this standard only.


Entry Level requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification; however we will ensure that you have the potential to achieve the qualification. Learners must have the minimum levels of literacy and numeracy to complete the learning outcomes and assessments.

We will make learners with particular requirements aware of the content of the qualification and they should be given every opportunity to successfully complete the qualification. We will consider any reasonable suggestions for, and from, those with disabilities that would help them to achieve the learning outcomes without compromising the standards required.

Guidance: It is intended for learners/engineers who are working in the fire-sector of the electrical industry and wish to update or refresh their understanding of this essential BSI publication. It may also be useful to electricians to gain an understanding of the standard.
